The Heart of a Father

My heart swelled with pride…….the first time I heard you cry, the first time I looked into your eyes, the first time I touched your soft skin, the first time I held you close to my heart, the first time…….There are always and forever first times as a daddy watches his baby grow.

You are beautiful my love.  I will hold you close when you cry.  I will always be here to rock you and hold you when your life is overwhelming.  You have my heart, my child.  I am your biggest fan!  Never give up!  You have more courage than you will ever know.

“Watch me twirl daddy!”  “Daddy, I fell down, look at my knees, can you make me all better?”  “Daddy, can you hold me?”  “Can you pray with me and tuck me in?”  “Will you teach me to whistle so loud like you?”  “Watcha doing Daddy, can I help?”  “Where are you going?  Can I ride in the truck with you?”  “I wrote a poem for you, do you like it?”    “I love you, daddy!”

“You can do it!”  “I am so proud of you!”  “Do you know how much I love you? To the moon and back!”  “I need a hug, my little one!”  “You can do anything you put your mind to!”  “How did you get so smart?”  “You remind me of your mommy!”  “When did you get so big?”  “Shoot for the moon, if you miss, you will land among the stars!”  “There are always so many crabs in the bucket wanting to pull you back down, don’t ever give in, don’t ever give up, and when you succeed, pull others up with you.”

The time goes so fast, from the day a child is conceived to the day they leave home and start the journey laid out before them.  The heart of a Father……patiently praying, watching, waiting, listening, comforting, adoring, holding close but knowing when to let go.  The stern hand of discipline, the steady warrior, the comforting voice, the example to follow.  The one who holds the hand of his child for a little while, and the heart of his child forever.  The one whose words mean so much to the tenderness of his child.

A Father….. a model of strength, love, respect, hard work, and a can do spirit!  A guide in the storm, a comfort in fear, a light in the darkness, and the voice of wisdom.  The one to make you laugh when all you want to do is cry.  The one to let you cry when your whole body wants to give up on life!  The one who will listen for hours and speak if necessary.  The one who makes up jokes and can laugh at his own mistakes.

The heart of a father shows up in the strength of a man to share his emotion when it comes to his children, to shower them with love, and nurture them to the best of his ability.  No matter what each of us have experienced in life……. whether you had a father that treated you with all the love in the world, or a father that you never heard from again, who disappeared from life…….know that you will always have the love of the Father in Heaven.  You were conceived for a purpose in this life-long journey, you have a destiny, you have life to live to the fullest, and others to encourage along the way.  When you get to where you are going in life, turn around and help the next one in line.

My favorite song of all time, Tim McGraw, “Humble and Kind”.  https://youtu.be/awzNHuGqoMc

This song reminds me of my Father, his love, support, kind words, humility of heart, and simplicity of life.  My hope for you, this Father’s Day, to connect, re-connect, remember the one who was a big part in raising you, nurturing you…..maybe it was your biological father, a step-dad, a grandfather, an uncle, a youth pastor, a counselor, or a single mom who was both mother and father to you.  And if you are a father to others, support them with all of your heart your whole life long.

“My child, you are worthy of being loved – not because of the personality, charm, or sense of humor that I have given to you, but because you are so precious to me that I died for you.”  The Love of the Father in Heaven.

1 John 3:1. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us that we should be called children of God!”

“She did not stand alone, but what stood behind her, the most potent moral force in all of her life, was the love of her father.”  Harper Lee
